As an empath, introvert and lightworker, I have always known deep down in the core of me that I was meant to do great
things. I have also always known that I am highly intelligent, creative and
gifted. However, in my past, the jobs that I “attracted” had always left me with a feeling of
deep dissatisfaction like “something” was missing.
I often felt like I was
wasting my efforts and abilities because I was forced to fit into the status quo in those highly monitored, “hamster-in-a-wheel” type positions. I
was forced to accept the status quo and to pretend that it was normal. But it wasn't normal. At least not for me. And this
was a pattern that would repeat itself, over and over again.
In fact, this strange, yet distinct pattern had been prevalent in most of my jobs from the time I was old enough to work to the more recent past. The first stage of this job pattern is what I refer to as
“the honeymoon phase.” This is the stage of employment where everyone
loves you.
I mean, everyone from your supervisor who would draw attention to everyone in earshot about your
impeccable communication and conflict resolution skills, to the custodian who would come by to make small talk with you while emptying your trash
can at your cubicle, or later as you moved up the corporate ladder, in your coveted corner office. And, as an extra "nicety," that custodian would also make sure to leave you some additional trash baggies just to demonstrate that you were shown favoritism over the others. *chuckles* ๐
The honeymoon phase never lasted
long, however. It usually fizzled out at around the three-month mark. After
this shift, “the persecution phase” soon followed. All of a sudden, every personal
and professional trait, skill and talent that I possessed and that was initially praised
by my superiors and peers, were now not only called into question, but placed on
display as a source of ridicule.
For example, no longer was I praised for my
impeccable verbal and written communication skills like I had been previously. Instead, I was questioned about if whether I was speaking and/or putting things in
writing to “overshadow,” compete with, and/or “correct” my superiors and peers. Um...can we say insecure AF? *eye roll* ๐
After the persecution phase, would come “the operation sabotage phase.” Sometimes this phase followed months later. Other
times it took only days for my superiors, work peers and/or subordinates to
initiate their sabotage against me. It all depended on how insecure and/or
petty they were in that particular work environment. Or, later in my corporate career, the speed and timing of the sabotage campaign depended on how coveted my salary and position was. Timing aside though, what was
certain was that all of the parties involved had determined that I was a
threat to their professional and personal sensibilities and to their job
security, and therefore, I had to go! The nerve!
As a result, they went into full gear to either get me fired or to pressure me into
resigning. This was evident by their constant setups and tactics of undermining my
productivity, sabotaging my work projects, and attempting to destroy my confidence and overall
sense of professional support and safety at every turn.
And this, ladies and gentlemen, was the pattern. Job after job, no matter what industry or position I chose, this familiar yet unsettling pattern followed me. However, it wasn’t
until after I had undergone a series of spiritual awakenings and had begun to seriously ponder about why this pattern had continued to follow me that I finally discovered the reason. And, it was so simple yet profound!
This strange "success-failure" job cycle had finally helped me to acknowledge that as an empath, introvert and lightworker, I was never
meant to be a perpetual employee until retirement, or death--whichever came first! To the contrary, I was simply
meant to learn the lessons that I needed to learn, develop the skills that I
needed to develop, and then use all of those tools gathered from each place of
employment to create my own path, and to then inspire others to do the
same! This, I discovered is my purpose.
So yes. This is my purpose, and not because I think that I am better than anyone
else. Not at all. It is because through my journey of self-love and self-discovery, I have
come to understand that I, and other individuals like myself were not born to simply
fit in with the status quo. We didn’t come to follow. We came to lead. And we
didn’t come to uphold or sustain the status quo either. We came to provide some
alternatives. We came to tear down old systems and to build new ones.
We came to show by example that
there are more innovative and fulfilling ways and paths to make money
and to live a happy and prosperous life other than via the corporate America route. And, although it is not our intention,
these alternative ways do, however, challenge the old paradigms of
authority, societal standards and tradition. But they are ways, nonetheless, that
allow us to live a life that we ourselves have created rather than a
life that was created for us. So, it is a challenge that I, as well as
other empaths, introverts and lightworkers are willing to pose.
And so, based on this internal truth,
I have now come to understand that when it comes to corporate America, or any
work environment where one is obligated to work for someone other than oneself,
there are 4 reasons why empaths, introverts & lightworkers should limit
how long they work.
The first reason why
you, as an empath, introvert and lightworker should limit how long you work in corporate America is because you have a purpose to fulfill and only a limited
time to fulfill it. That’s right! When it comes to unique and dynamic individuals who were born to be great, you may have a limitless amount of God-given
talents, gifts and potential, but the time that you and I have on this earth to
do something with these gifts and potential is finite and limited!
You have to strike while the iron
is hot, as they say. However, the problem with working in corporate America
without an exit strategy and date planned is that, by the time you have an aha
moment and finally realize that you have a greater life purpose other than
living to pay bills, and that you are not
fulfilling this purpose at your current job, oftentimes your iron is no longer
hot! It has become lukewarm at best.
This means that you have to work a lot
harder to navigate around the resistance and obstacles more so now than you
would have had to previously in order to extricate yourself from the “9 to 5
bid” because you have become too comfortable and complacent.
Also, your lifestyle is now mirroring
this complacency along with the “agreement” that you made (unbeknownst to you)
to the status quo system, a system that you have now become indebted to. In
other words, you have now fallen into the trap that the corporate America “beast” has set for
you. Meaning, you now have responsibilities that you are bound to rendering it
extremely difficult if not impossible to walk away from. Such a lifestyle does not typically
afford for one to take those courageous and oftentimes down-right frightful
“risks” that is required of those who choose to go against the grain of
society.
However, this is indeed part and
parcel with working in corporate America. And this, ladies and gentlemen is the problem! If you don’t have a game plan or
an exit strategy wherein you have set a limited amount of time for how
long you plan to work in corporate America, you will risk spending more time in an environment than was necessary to learn the lessons required and the
skills needed in order for you to step out on your own to live your purpose on your
terms.
The second reason why you as an
empath, introvert and lightworker should limit the amount of time that you work
in corporate America is because corporate America is toxic and draining! Yeah,
I said it! Call me an altruistic hippie if you like, but many of you if you are
honest with yourselves will admit that working in corporate America is a very
arduous, soul-sucking, energy-draining battle!
And, it matters not if you have
a fancy little title and position and a high paying salary. This means nothing
other than the fact that you are your employer’s “on-call bitch!” Granted, you are a
nicely-salaried bitch. But you are a bitch, nonetheless. *cues Rihanna's song* "Bitch Better Have My Money!" ๐
And, you know what else? So what if you wear those tailored power suits, toting your name brand briefcase in hand. Because when your narcissistic, "asshole of a boss," Mr. Alexander Duke, or “Dookie”
for short, calls you away from your wife and children on a Saturday morning,
you will still report to his office even though you are mad as
hell, spewing all manner of obscenities on your drive there. And yes, you will
report to his (or her) office! Yes, you will! And once there, you will proceed
to bend over and spread ‘em! ๐
And why pray tell, would you do such a
thing? Why would you continue to allow your autonomy, time, and free will, not to mention your inner convictions to be
continuously compromised? Because you
are looking at the big picture, of course. And that big picture is to remain
employed!
Also, corporate America is so very toxic
and draining to an empath, introvert and lightworker because, more often than not, you are required to work with and around people whom, outside of forced work situations, you would not even say hello to, let alone spend eight or more
hours of your life with every day. Add to this the fact that these individuals usually possess personality and character traits that you simply do not resonate with at all, and, you are outnumbered! *Time to schedule another Reiki session!* ๐
In fact, one of the main reasons why it is downright difficult for an empath, introvert and lightworker to work with these type of individuals who run amok in corporate America is because they are the type of folks who typically do as little
work as possible; and, the work that they do manage to complete is
half-assed at best! The end result? You! Yes you, that hardworking, over-reliable empath and chap is left with the responsibility--thanks to your boss,
“Mr. Dookie”--to clean up their mess!
So you clean up their mess in order to keep the system running smoothly and to help them all continue to look good, at your expense, of course. Suddenly, it becomes all too clear that, on the one end, while they don't like or value you, on the other end they sure as hell can't function effectively without you, along with your talents and creativity that you bring to the proverbial table. Obviously, you, as an empath, introvert and lightworker are quite a wonder to behold! *smirk* ๐
The third reason why you should
limit the time you work in corporate America is because corporate America
siphons your creative energy and exploits your gifts that were meant foryou,
not your boss or corporation to prosper from. For example, have you ever
worked for a company and while there that said company and/or department that
you headed or worked in was thriving? However, after you left it was thrust into total chaos?
I
have. It has happened to me on numerous occasions. Too many occasions, in fact, for this phenomenon to be merely a coincidence. Sooner or later, I would always
get a call from that old work acquaintance who was “just thinking about me,”
and had called or emailed me because they wanted to know how I was fairing in life.
But while they were prying for
information about where I was currently working, and wondering about how the company or organization where I was stationed was doing, I too got an
opportunity to receive some intel about how they were doing as well. Turns out that, oftentimes, they had fallen
completely apart. For example, I would be told about how my former supervisor,
“Mr." or "Ms. So and So” was let go, or how a former colleague who had been
the appointed ring leader in my workplace bullying had either gotten
fired or had fallen ill and placed on medical leave.
To me, this was a sign that in
some way or another my co-workers, immediate superiors and the companies/organizations
for which I was working were all somehow exploiting my gifts and siphoning my creative
and healing energy! This was the case
even while they were still plotting and scheming to undermine my work performance and overall professional standing while I was there. And, if you are an empath, introvert and
lightworker, I can almost guarantee that corporate America is exploiting your
talents and sucking the life and creative energy out of you too!
And, the fourth reason
why you as an empath, introvert and lightworker should limit your time in corporate America is because we came to show others an alternative way to make
a living other than by corporate America. Now, for me this is just common sense.
For example, it would make no sense to continue to invest your
time, your energy and resources, and your talents to a system that you merely came to learn from and then walk away from. Instead, you and I and others like us have come to show, through our example, alternative ways of creating a
purpose-driven life that goes beyond the corporate America/work-for-others
paradigm.
Also, like me, many of you are aware
that there is something fundamentally wrong with the corporate America
structure. You are aware that it is a structure that fosters dependence on an outside entity for one's stability and security rather than a reliance on oneself. And
this, as you know is extremely dangerous because dependency creates a perpetual state of anxiety, not to
mention an imbalanced power dynamic between the employer and employee. This in turn instills a never-ending cycle of lack and bondage.
For example, at the time of the
writing of this article, our world is currently facing a pandemic called the Corona
Virus which has quickly thrust our world into a global economic recession. As a
result, many individuals have lost and continue to lose their jobs. With
the loss of these jobs could come the potential risk of these individuals losing their homes to foreclosure. Also, as medical
bills continue to mount for those who have been directly affected by the virus, they could also risk financial bankruptcy as their medical bills exceed
the amount of health coverage provided to them to cover themselves and their
families.
This is indeed a cruel fate for those who have invested
so much of their energy, creativity and talents into their jobs, only to experience the harsh reality that when it comes to corporate America, its only loyalty is to its own bottom line, and
not to you as its employee!
Therefore, for those of us who
know with every fiber of our being that we were born to be great and to do more
than simply clock in and out, sleep, eat and repeat, and with absolutely no
guarantee of job security and/or loyalty, we know that if we have
answered the call to live on purpose and to thrive and not merely to exist, that
time is of the essence here. For these reasons, and many more not mentioned, we as empaths,
introverts and lightworkers know that there is definitely a limit to how
long we plan to work in corporate America! Do you agree? I am curious to know!
